For the year of 2020

  • World Leprosy Day was conducted on January 31st 2020 at UHC, Bashanagar. Dr. Rakesh J, Assistant Professor gave a talk on treatment and preventive aspects of leprosy to local general population. Dr. Anupama, post graduate students discussed about its burden and clinical features.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar was involved in the effective vaccine management assessment of Assam state as national assessor. The assessment orientation workshop and field assessment work was conducted from 18th to 28th Feb 2020.
  • Dr. Asha Bullappa, Associate Professor participated in Webinar series and presented on the topic “ Obesity” organized by Department of Community Medicine, AIMS, Belur to 6th term students of AIMS, Belur.

COVID 19

  • Line listing of persons from other district/state/country residing in our field practice area and daily house visits for screening of COVID-19 symptoms.
  • List of vulnerable persons was done and regular follow up with house visits done. Daily feedback report regarding the same will be sent to Taluk health office
  • Screening of all TB patients for COVID-19.

Activities for the year 2019-2020

  • Dr. Rakesh J and Dr. Anupama K gave a talk on mental health in PHC, Lokikere to general community on World Mental Health day on 25th Oct 2019.
  • World hand washing day – Dr. Vidya V Patil and Dr. Anupama along with Mr. Ashok Kumar and interns participated in world hand washing day observation and educated the community regarding correct hand washing practices.’ on 19.10.19
  • Dr. Vidya V Patil and Dr. Anupama along with Mr. Ashok Kumar and interns participated in world obesity day and informed the participants regarding problems due to obesity and how to prevent obesity on 15.10.2019
  • Dr. Vidya B, Dr. Faye and Mr. Ashok gave a talk on mental health in UHTC on 18.10.2019 on the occasion of World Mental Health Day.
  • World diabetes day was observed in PHC, Lokikere to the general population. Dr. Anupama, Dr. Vinayak JK along with interns and MSWs conducted the programme. Dr. Anupama gave a talk on diabetes – causation, symptoms and signs, complications, prevention and treatment.
  • Dr. Rakesh and Dr. Anupama participated in Mission Indradhanush. 2.0 as external monitors supporting WHO activities in Davangere district from 2nd to 5th Dec, 2019.
  • Dr. Rakesh, Asst Prof and Dr. Anupama, Post graduate were involved in monitoring of Mission Indradhanush Programme by supporting the activities of WHO in Davangere district from Dec 2019 to March 2020.

For the year of 2019

  • 1. Health education programme was conducted to observe ‘National de-worming day’ – 10th Feb in Urban Health Centre, Bashanagar to patients attending the centre by Dr. Asha B, Assistant Professor.
  • 2. Non Communicable Diseases Training for Medical Officers under NPCDCSwas jointly organized by Government of Karnataka and Project Hope, an NGO.
    A training programme on population-based screening in non communicable diseases was conducted for 55 paramedical staff of Chitradurga district on 5.2.19, for 47 medical officers of Chitradurga district on 07.02.2019, for 69 medical officers of Chikkamagalur district on 23.02.2019 and for 75 medical officers of Bellary district on 06.03.2019 by Dr. Geethalakshmi RG, Prof and Head.
    Dr. Ratnaprabha conducted training programme on 31/01/2019 for paramedical staff and 12/02/2019 for Medical Officers of Davangere District, 22/02/2019 – Medical Officers of Mangaluru District, 14/03/2019 – Medical Officers of Bidar District, 15/03/2019 – Medical Officers of Raichur District, 16/03/2019 – Medical Officers of Yadgir District.
  • 3. National deworming day was observed by conducting health education session at Anganwadi and Primary school at Kalkere camp by Dr. Rakesh J, Assistant Professor.
  • 4. Dr. Rakesh, Asst Prof; Dr. Vinayak, Asst Prof and Dr. Antao Faye Rose ( PG) were deputed as external monitors supporting WHO activities in pulse polio immunization programme, covering all taluks in Davangere district from March 10th to 13th, 2019.
  • 5. On the occasion of World TB day, a state level quiz on RNTCP – preliminary college round was conducted for all undergraduate students on 22nd March, 2019. Dr. Rakesh J, Asst Prof was the quiz co-ordinatorunder the supervision of Dr. Geethalakshmi R. G, Prof and Head, Dr. Raghavan G. D, DTO. A total of 80 teams participated actively and top 2 winners were awarded cash prize with a certificate
  • 6. A two day scientific fest tailored to meet the needs of exam going postgraduate students was conducted on 26th and 27th February 2019 named as “Anybody Can Face Exams” (ABCFE) organised by Department of Community Medicine SSIMS & RC and JJMMC, Davangere. Around eight Postgraduate students from various medical colleges from Karnataka participated in the workshop. Examiners were Dr Geethalakshmi RG Prof & Head Department of Community Medicine SSIMS & RC, Dr Anurupa, Professor, JJMMC, DrNagendra Gowda, Prof &Head,Basaveshwara Medical College Chitradurga, Dr VijayKumar, Professor, Sridevi Institute of Medical Sciences,Tumkur.
  • 7. First Aid training was conducted on 30th March, 2019 to students from Savitha fire and safety diploma college, Challakere, in association with department of emergency medicine and anaesthesia. A total of 18 students participated actively in the training programme. The resource persons (Dr. Aswin Kumar, Dr. Vinayak J. K, Dr. Rakesh, Dr. Ganesh, Dr. Bakkesh, Dr. Rajath, Dr. Rajesh Munigial and Dr.Shilpa Nair) for the training were from all the three departments
  • 8. World Health Day – 7th April was observed at PHC, Lokikere on 9th April, 2019 and spread the word regarding the theme – “universal health coverage” to local population by Dr. Vinayak J.K, Assistant Professor.
  • 9. On the eve of “World No Tobacco Day”, health education regarding the impact of consumption of smokeless tobacco was given by Dr. Asha B, Associate Professor to ASHA workers of Bashanagar area on 31.5.2019.
  • 10. Dr. Geethalakshmi RG, Prof and Head was invited as resource person and delivered a talk on study design for first year post graduates in the workshop on research methodology and medical ethics conducted by MEU and IERB and Research cell, SSIMSRC.
  • 11. Dr. Geethalakshmi RG, Prof and Head was invited as resource person and delivered a talk on study design for first year post graduates of JJMMC, Davangere in the workshop on research methodology organized by department of medical education unit( DOME) at library hall.
  • 12. Dr. Geethalakshmi RG, received indoor and outdoor championship trophy award on the college day celebration at Bapuji auditorium on 21st Sep 2019. Various indoor and outdoor events were conducted for the staff members of SSIMSRC in the month of Sep 2019.

  • 17. The Postgraduate students from department of community medicine attended the Annual State KACH conference held at AIMS Bellur, Mandya on 13th and 14th of September 2019.
    a. Dr Antao Faye presented a poster on a study titled ‘ Magnitude of depression and its association with self-care among patients with diabetes mellitus, in rural field practice area of a medical college in Davangere. It was guided by Dr Aswin Kumar, Professor.
    b. Dr. Anupama.k presented an oral paper on study titled – “Assessment of Neck circumference as an indicator of central obesity among healthy adults in Rural Karnataka”. Guided by Dr. Ratnaprabha. GK

Audience: ASHA workers Anganwadi workers participated in organization of the event. About 22 children participated in the “well baby competition” nearly 50 mothers participated in the event. Two best babies were awarded with the cash prize.

  • 11. Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor gave a talk on Diarrhea - Causes, Clinical features and classification in Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight, Zinc and ORS corner Workshop organized by Department of Pediatrics, Community Medicine, IAP, department of family and child welfare on 24th May, 2018 at LT 4, SSIMSRC, Davangere.
  • 10. Prenatal photoshoot and father craft class was conducted by Dr. Vinayak JK, Mr. Harish, Dr. Faye focused on role of father during antenatal period.
  • 9. Kitchen garden competition was conducted for school children mainly to focus on awareness regarding importance of papaya, drumstick leaves by Dr. Vinayak JK, Dr. Faye, Mr. Harish and interns
  • 8. Dr. Rakesh, Assistant Professor participated in Intensified Mission Indradhanush Program as External Monitor, supporting WHO activities. The monitoring was done on 20/06/18 and 21/06/18 which included session site monitoring and house to house monitoring at Jagalur taluk.
  • 7. Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor and Mr. Nagaraj. T. G, Medical Social Worker attended telemedicine based training programme on national programmes held on Zilla Panchayat, Davangere on 27th June, 2018.
  • 6. Condom Box Installation And Maintenance at National High Way Tollgate-Hebbal And Dhaba Hotels – done by Dr. Vinayak J. K and Mr. Ashok Kumar. According to studies /research truck drivers and cleaners act as a bridge population in spreading HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Keeping this issue in mind under social marketing strategy we installed condom boxes in toilets at Hebbal National highway tollgate and few dhaba hotels at NH4 highway. The condom boxes are freely supplied by District AIDS control unit, Davangere and maintained by Department of Community Medicine, S S Institute of Medical Sciences Davangere , in co-ordination with National Highway Authority of India-Hebbal tollgate and few dhaba hotels. This provides easy accessibility to condoms for truck drivers, cleaners and other general population and motivates to practice safe sex. The placard attached with it has information regarding spread of HIV infection and safe sexual practices by using condom.

  • Dr Ratnaprabha, Dr Anoop Banur, Dr Jayasimha and Dr Asha Bullappa underwent Technical and Operational Guidelines (TOG) for TB control in India at SSIMS & RC Davangere, organized by DTO during 19th – 24th May 2017. Dr Geethalaksmi R.G was one of the resource persons for the above mentioned training.

  • Dr. Geethalakshmi. R. G attended State Task Force (STF) Meeting-RNTCP – Medical Colleges. It was held at SIFHW Bangalore to plan for effective role out of Revised TOG 2016 in all Medical Colleges , plan for CMEs / State conference and also address any technical / financial issues on 23rd Dec, 2017. Participants: Attended by all Nodal officers from both private and govt. Medical colleges along with STO and State Nodal Officers of RNTCP program (about 100 participants).
  • Seminar on TB awareness program organized by Rotary and Inner Wheel clubs of Davangere Zone, RID 3160 jointly with Dept. of Bio-technology, Bapuji Institute of Engineering & Technology, Davangere on 19th Dec, 2017. About 150 participants were present.
  • TB awareness program for the general public of Sri Ramanagar in a medical camp organized by SSIMS & RC, Davangere on 10.12.2017. About 130 participants were present.
  • Cervical and Breast cancer awareness program for the general public of Kakkaragolla in a medical camp on 15.10.2017, organized by SSIMS & RC, Davangere. About 150 participants were present.

  • 1st August to 7th August 2017 - WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2017 observed by the Department of Community Medicine Formal Inauguration of world Breastfeeding Week 2017 in co-ordination with Department of Community Medicine, Pediatrics & OBG was done followed by health talk for nursing staff of SSIMS&RC hospital on the benefits of breastfeeding by Dr. Geethalakshmi R. G Prof & HOD Department of Community Medicine. Health Education was delivered to pregnant & lactating mothers of Lokikere and Bashanagar by Dr. Vidya. B, Assistant Professor followed by role play by interns under the guidance of Dr. Vinayak, Assistant Professor. Dr Aswin kumar, Dr. Rathnaprabha, Associate Professors, gave Health Talk on benefits of Breastfeeding for Undergraduate students and nursing staff of private nursing homes of Davangere in Child Health Institute(CHI) respectively. Essay writing compitition was organized for PU college girls and followed by Health Talk by Post Graduates Dr. Netra and Dr. Smitha under the Guidance of Dr. Mane Kusum, Associate Professor, Dr.Rakesh J, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, gave a talk on World Breast Feeding Week 2017 theme and benefits of breast feeding to the baby and mother, to the interns posted in all the departments. Dr. Mane kusum, Associate Professor,gave a health talk to the nursing students of SSINS on benefits of breastfeeding and on the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2017.
  • Training about new RNTCP guidelines to ASHA workers and PHC staff was given by Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor on 21.7.2017.
  • Health education about dengue disease and its prevention was given by Dr. Kusum Mane, Associate Professor, to students of Shri Maruthi PU College, Lokikere on 1.8.2017.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar, Associate Professor was trained for RNTCP new guidelines organized by State Task Force, RNTCP in JJMMC, Davangere.

  • Dr. Geethalakshmi. R. G, Prof and Head worked as facilitator for TOG on RNTCP for district medical officers conducted at JJMMC lecture hall in 3 batches from 19th to 21st June, 22nd to 24th June 2017 and from 4th to 6th July 2017
  • On the eve of international yoga day, Dr. Geethalakshmi. R. G, Prof and Head, gave a talk at Divya yoga Mandira for about 60 participants on the topic - Yoga in prevention of diseases.

  • ‘Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight’ training activity was conducted in by Dr. R. M. Naik to train ANM and ASHA workers. Dr. Madonna gave a talk on importance of breastfeeding. Mr. Ashok Kumar (MSW), PHC staff and interns participated in the event.

  • Health education program about awareness about health hazards of tobacco consumption was conducted in anganwadi of Kolkunte village on the eve of ‘No Tobacco Day’ by Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor on 31.05.2017. Interns, Mr. Ashok Kumar( MSW), PHC staff participated in the event.
  • Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor conducted a Participatory Rural Appraisal in Giriyapura village to assess the health needs of the community at Anganwadi centre, Giriyapura on 19.5.2017. Dr. Nethra. G (PG), Interns, Mr. Ashok Kumar (MSW) and Mr. Nagaraj. T.G (MSW) and PHC staff participated in the event.
  • Dr. Mane Kusum, Assistant Professor and Dr. Girijamma, Medical Officer, UHC, Bashanagar addressed the women attending UHC on Tuberculosis on the eve of World TB day. Mr. Harsha, MSW and interns attended the event.
  • Essay competition at state level was conducted by RNTCP on “Role of medical colleges in end TB 2015”. Dr. Nethra. G, post graduate in department of community medicine bagged 2nd prize in the essay competition guided by Dr. Geethalakshmi R.G.

  • Dr. Geethalakshmi. R.G, Prof and Head attended training on RNTCP Technical and Operational Guidelines 2016 in India at CG Hospital conducted by District Health Society, TB Division from 28.2.17 to 2.3.17 and participated as a delegate in RNTCP ZTF workshop at KIMS, Bangalore on 2.2.17 and 3.2.17.
  • De-worming day was observed on 10.2.17 in Anganwadi centres of Lokikere A and B. Dr. Madonna D’Souza, postgraduate, Ashok Kumar, MSW and interns participated in the programme.
  • Health awareness about mother and child care was addressed to pregnant and lactating mother and their care takers in Sirigere CHC on 16.3.17 by Dr. Asha Bullappa, Assistant Professor.
  • Eye check up camp was done on the eve of Glaucoma week with collaboration from Department of Ophthalmology on 12.3.17, 15.3.17 and 17.3.17 in PHC Lokikere and Subcentre Thurchgatta.
  • Measles Rubella Campaign was monitored in the PHC Lokikere field practice area from 7.2.17 to 28.2.17 by all staff of Community Medicine.
  • A sensitization on Measles Rubella Campaign was done on 2.2.2017 to school teachers in Lokikere PHC area under the guidance of Dr. R. M. Naik, Medical Officer of PHC, Dr. Nethra and Dr. Muhammad Muntazeem G, postgraduates, Ashok Kumar, MSW, interns and PHC Staff.
  • A half day workshop on International Classification of Diseases-10 was organized by Department of Community Medicine in association with Central Bureau of Health Intelligence, H&FW, Bangalore on 1.2.2017. The programme was supported by Dr. B. S. Prasad, Principal, SSIMSRC, inaugurated by Dr. N. K. Kalapppanavar, Medical Director, SSIMSRC, Dr. Geethalakshmi. R. G., Prof & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine, Mr. N. Suseendra Babu, Deputy Director, CBHI, Bangalore and Mr. D.M. Joseph, Medical Records Consultant in St. Johns Medical College Hospital, Bangalore.
  • On 28th November 2011, Department of Community Medicine conducted a training programme for staff nurses on “Hospital Health & Hygiene Management”. All the staff of Department of Community Medicine were involved in the programme.
  • Training on newer guidelines of RNTCP for staff nurses was conducted by Dept of Community Medicine. This programme was carried out every month for 4 months from 28th November 2011 onwards.
  • Training programme for staff nurses was carried out on “Breastfeeding practices”. This training was carried out every week for two months starting from 7th August 2012. This programme was organized by Dept of Community Medicine in collaboration with Dept of Anatomy, Physiology, Paediatrics and OBG.

Our Outreach Activities

  • National Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Programme was held at Davangere on 19th Feb 2012. Dr. Mahesh DK, Dr. Santosh A & Dr. Divya Pai along with 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th term students participated
  • Health checkup Camp on obesity, hypertension and diabetes for Zill Parishad members and staff was organized by Youth Red Cross Wing of SSIMS &RC, Indian Red Cross district branch and Zilla Parishad Davangere on 10th May 2012
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar delivered a speech on healthcare on HIV/AIDS held at Indian Red Cross society, Davangere organized by Youth Red Cross & Diet, SSIMS branch
  • An awareness session on “Dengue fever” at Bakkeshwara School, Davangere on 26th July 2012. Dr. Aswin Kumar and Dr. Ayesha Nawaz participated in the programme.
  • Dr. Varadaraj Rao, Professor & Head, gave a live talk on the radio on “Dengue and protein energy malnutrition” at Chitradurga All India Radio Station.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar participated as a resource person in two days training programme on disaster Management held at Officer’s Club, Davangere on 10th & 11th of Aug 2012.
  • Health checkup camp for school children held at Harihar on 13th Aug 2012. Dr. Aswin Kumar and Dr. Devaraj and interns participated in the camp.
  • Health checkup for school children was conducted under Suvarna Arogya Chaitanya Karyakrama at 22 Primary and middle schools under lokikere PHC area, during the period of Aug to Sept 2012 under the supervision of HOD.

  • A free health checkup was organized by the department of Community Medicine for all the girl children in anganwadis coming under Lokikere PHC, who were enrolled in Bhagyalaxmi Scheme, in a span of one week in the month of November 2012.
  • Awareness session on “Birth spacing and methods of contraception” at PHC, Lokikere on 17th Nov 2012 by Dr. Aswin Kumar.
  • Awareness session on “Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health” to school children on 30th Nov 2012 by Dr. Devaraj.
  • Free health checkup for pregnant mothers was organized at the anganwadis on 4th Dec 2012. Dr. Ayesha Nawaz spoke on Antenatal care and Breastfeeding practices following delivery.
  • Screening programme for cervical cancer was launched at PHC, Lokikere on 13th Dec 2012. Health awareness on carcinoma cervix and breast was given in PHC by Dr. Ratnaprabha. Subsequently every Thursday, awareness sessions have been continued along with pap tests and breast examination for all volunteered women who aged 21+ yrs attending the OPD.

  • Specialists’ Health Camp for disabled people organized by DDRC in collaboration with Dept. of Community Medicine, Davangere at Angodu, Taluk Davangere on 12th Jan 2013. Dr BA Vradaraj Rao, Dr Suryakantha and Dr Bheemayya along with other junior staff attended from the department attended the camp.
  • Dr. Kusum Mane, Asst Professor, created awareness among high school students on “Hazards of tobacco”, in various schools in areas under Lokikere PHC from 18th to 22nd Feb 2013.
  • Active participation of interns and PG students during National Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization Programme conducted on 20th January 2013 in Davangere.
  • Postgraduate students Dr. Santosh and Dr. Devraj were posted as WHO monitors to supervise the Pulse polio immunization programme at Jagalur and Harapanahalli taluks from 24th-27th February 2013.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar spoke on Disaster Management at a programme organized at rotary club, Davangere.
  • Prof & Head Dr. Varadaraj, Assistant prof Dr. Kusum Mane and Dr. Ayesha Nawaz participated in the health checkup camp at DEd college, Davangere on 22nd March. On this occasion Dr. Ayesha spoke on adolescent health.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar participated as resource person in a training programme on First Aid for school children at Chennagiri on 27th March 2013.
  • Dr. Aswin Kumar spoke on First Aid at a programme organized at a school in Harapanahalli on 28th March 2013.
