We are privileged to share the summary of the activities of the Department of Pathology for the year 2015-2016.
The department remains committed to being a leading participant in the effort of the Medical College to become one of the premiere institutions in health care and medical education.
Last year was a pivotal year for the department and we saw the changes introduced during the last 3 years, which matured and yielded the first fruits, that is our post graduate students secured the first, fifth and the seventh rank at the MD pathology exams, conducted in May 2015.
We are happy to say that we conducted the KCIAPM’s 5th state level post graduate – quiz in Histotechniques, Cytotechniques & Blood banking which was a grand success and an academic feast. Our department conducts many teaching learning programmes not only for postgraduates but also for undergraduates like tips in learning, and guest lectures from faculty from other institutions. Our postgraduates have taken part in National, International CME’s case discussions and earned laurelles to the institution with a commitment to patient care, education and research. We dare ready to continue on this exciting journey and sure that we will make it happen.

Tips for better learning in pathology for Post Graduates”. PGs in Pathology were given tips on how to learn Pathology in better & interesting way. Dr Md Shariff, Associate Professor in Pathology, Yenapoya Medical college, Mangalore along with Dr Atul Ranade, Assistant Professor of pathology, RCSM Govt Medical College, Kohlapur and Dr Suresh K K, Professor, Pathology, JJMMC, Davangere. All PGs of pathology and staff members attended the meeting.

KCIAPM conducted a slide seminar. Dr Shweta Pai, 2nd year PG under the guidance of Dr Shashikala P presented a slide & won the best presenter award.
04-02-2015:
Interdepartmental case discussion between the Department of Surgery & Pathology with a clinical diagnosis of Hollow viscous perforation with peritonitis with a final diagnosis of TB intestine was discussed. Dr Ganesh, 1st year postgraduate in Surgery and Dr Kavita G U, Professor of Pathology presented the case.
5th Feb to 7th Feb, 2015:
International CME in Pathology, Histopathology and Cytopathology held at Nursing college, Goa hosted by Goa Medical college. Poster was presented by Dr Chethan Sagar titled “Bethesda VI-A Thyroid malignancy –a case report.
14th and 15th Feb, 2015:
IAC-KC conference 2015, 3rd annual conference was held at Bellary. Dr Reddy Kavitha ,1st year PG presented a poster on “ Cytological diagnosis of thyroid neoplasms- An experience”. Dr Sreedevi attended the conference as a delegate.
25-03-2015:
Dr Shashikala P , Professor and Head, Dept of Pathology, SSIMS & RC conducted a CME on Dermatopathology titles “Dermpath primer 2015” at Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh organized by SRMSIMS college. She spoke in 2 sessions on Basic dermatopathology- Epidermis and lesions and also conducted a quiz and slide seminar for PG delegates. Dr Kavitha GU , Professor of Pathology also attended the CME and spoke on Histology of Dermis
29.05.2015:
Laboratory personnel’s day was celebrated Importance of laboratory technicians & doctors was highlighted to technicians of Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology and blood bank through video demonstration. The programmed was conducted by ortho clinical diagnostics of Johnson & Johnsons Company.
20.05.2015:
First post graduate examination of RGUHS and MCI recognition inspection was conducted. Three postgraduates took the exams.
16.06.2015:
85th Birthday of our beloved Chairman Dr. Shamanur Shivashankarappa was celebrated. Blood donation camp was organized by students council at central wing hospital block. Blood bank team along with staff of Department of Pathology conducted the camp. Principal, Dr. B.S.Prasad, Administrator, Mr. Satyanaryana, Director Dr. N. Kalappanvar Vice Principal, Dr. Shashikala P. & Dr. Arun Kumar Ajjappa and Heads of all Departments, other teaching and non-teaching staff of SSIMS & RC and students council members, undergraduates & postgraduates of the Institute were all present on the occasion. About 33 undergraduates donated blood on the occasion.
20.06.2015:
Dr. Shashikala P. Professor and Head, Department of Pathology was the guest speaker at CME on “BONE & SOFT TISSUE PATHOLOGY” conducted by Department of Pathology “Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar and spoke on “Approach to bone tumors & tumour – like lesions” and also conducted slide seminar. Post graduates Dr. Kavitha Reddy, Dr. Laxmi Ronada & Dr. Sujoy kumar De also attended the CME.
8 & 9thAug.2015:
PATHFEST SYMPOSIUM SERIES – 2015, Bangalore Chapter held at St. Martha’s Hospital, Bangalore. Dr. Shashikala P. Professor & Head of department of Pathology presented slide seminar on Lepromatous lymphadenitis, Gaucher spleen, Sperm granuloma, Chromoblastomycosis & chronic gastritis on 8th August. Post graduates attended were Dr. Laxmi Ronada, Dr. Shwetha Pai, Dr. Sujoy Kumar De, Dr. Chethan Sagar and Dr. Kavita Reddy.

Research Methodology workshop -2015, held at Hassan Institute of Medical sciences, Hassan. Postgraduates Dr. Shwetha .S. Kollur & Dr. Malashree attended the workshop.

42nd KCIAPM STATE CONFERENCE A.J. Shetty Medical College, Mangalore. Dr. Shashikala P. Professor & Heath dept of Pathology was the moderator for a Session on Myelodysplastic syndromes by Dr. Seethlakshmi, St. John’s Medical college & a Judge for poster presentation. Dr. Deepti Pruthvi was the judge for poster presentation & Dr. Kavita G.U. attended the conference. Postgraduates attended and presented poster & papers. Dr. Reddy Kavita – Oral paper on Histomorphological study of tonsils. Dr. Ankur Majumder – Oral paper on Evaluation of platelets of neonatal sepsis. Dr. Laxmi Ronada – RDW in geriatrics. Dr. Chethan Sagar – Oral paper – Platelet Indices; A simple & practical marker of coagulation in IHD patients – Semifinalist. Dr. Malashree – Poster on “Retroperitoneal Schwannoma”. Dr. Shweta Kollur – Poster on Ewing’s sarcoma. Dr.Shashikala was nominated as executive Committee member. Dr.Kavita.G.U. was nominated for E-Journal.
27.09.2015:
A CPC was conducted at the “Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Karnataka State Chapter 8th Annual conference 2015, by Dr. Shashikala P. Professor & Head Department of Pathology & Vice – Principal, SSIMS & RC. Dr. E.R. Siddeshi Gastroenterologist was the chairperson for the session along with Dr. Mallikarjun Sakpal, Dept of surgery. The clinical aspects of the case were discussed by Dr. Prasanna Rao, consultant Gastroenterologist Apollo Hospitals, Bannergatta Road, while pathological aspects were discussed by Dr. Shashikala P. Dr. Shweta Pai , Postgraduate in Pathology presented the slides. Dr. Kavita G.U. Professor, Pathology also participated in the discussion.
29.09.2015:
Interdepartmental teaching programme was conducted by department of pathology, dept.of radiology, dept.of neurosurgery & dept.of neurology. A case of “Giant Ancient Schwannoma – Intradural and extramedullary T12 to L5 region” was presented by Dr.Sonam.S.Nandyal, Asso.Prof. of Pathology & Dr.Sujoy Kumar De, Post graduate of pathology.

A CME on “ Haematological problems in Obstetrics” was conducted by Department of Pathology & Department of OBG, at JJM auditorium. The following staff members Dr Sonam S Nandyal, Dr Shweta JH, Dr Rajashree K & Post graduates Dr Lakshmi Ronada, Dr Malashree, Dr Shweta S Kollur attended the same.
06.12.2015:
KCIAPM slide seminar was held at Anand Diagnostic Laboratory, Bowring tower, Bangalore. Dr.Laxmi Ronada, II year Postgraduate student presented a case of Septal panniculitis who represented the college.
9.1.2016:
An integrated UG teaching programme was conducted by the department of physiology on 9/1/2016 at LT-1. Dr.Shwetha.J.H, Asst.Prof. Dept.of Pathology gave a lecture on diagnostic evaluation of Iron-deficiency anemia for Ist Year MBBS students.
31.1.2016:
A voluntary blood donation camp was organized by members of Yoga Shibira at Mothi Veerappa Compound on 31/1/2016 in association with S.S.Blood Bank. Dr.Shwetha.J.H., Blood Bank Officer along with Dr.Akshatha & Dr.Gunpreet Anand conducted the camp along with post graduate students Dr.Udayshankar, Dr.Sujoy Kumar De, interns, blood bank technicians and attenders. A total of 66 units of blood were collected.
31.1.2016:
A voluntary blood donation camp was organized by JCI cotton, Kottur, at 9.A.M. Blood bank officer along with Post graduate student Dr.Chethan Sagar.S. and interns attended the camp.70 units of blood were collected.
9.2.2016:
Blood donation camp held at Zilla Panchayat Office at 1.00P.M. Dr.Rajashree, Asst.Prof, Dept. of Pathology along with Post graduates Dr.Chethan Sagar, Dr.Kavitha Reddy, Dr.Shwetha Kollur attended the blood donation camp. 18 units of blood were collected.
27.2.2016:
5th State Level Post graduate Quiz – “Paramita” 2016 organised by the Dept.of Pathology, SSIMS & RC in association with Karnataka Chapter of Indian Association of Pathologist & Microbiologists was held in LT-3, SSIMS & RC, Davangere. The topics for the Quiz were “Histotechniques, Cytotechniques & Blood banking”. The Quiz programme was inaugurated by the Principal Dr.B.S.Prasad, SSIMS & RC, Pre amble was given by Dr.Shashikala.P. Prof.& Head of the dept.of Pathology. Dr.Gowda Kavita Umapathy, Professor Dept.of Pathology gave the welcome speech and Dr.Deepti Pruthvi, Professor of Pathology delivered vote of thanks. Dr.A.V.Angadi, Prof. & HOD of Anatomy, Dr.C.R.Mallikarjuna, Prof. & HOD of Biochemistry & Dr.K.G.Basavarajappa, Prof. & HOD of Microbiology along with the faculty from other departments also graced the inaugural function. The quiz was conducted in two levels. 28 teams from different post graduate Medical colleges participated in the preliminary multiple choice question round. Six finalists were selected based on the MCQ round score. Second & final level comprised of 8 rounds. Dr.Shashikala.P. was the quiz master for the histotechniques & cytotechniques rounds. Dr.Ganga.S.Pilli,Professor & Blood Bank incharge, JNMC, Belgaum and Dr.Gowda Kavita Umapathy were the quiz masters for the blood banking round. Dr.Ankita Hebbar & Dr.Sandya Madhu from ESI Medical College, bagged the first place. Dr.Sadiya Siddiqa & Dr.Prateeksha Pai from BIMS Belgaum secured the IInd place.
12.03.2016:
Voluntary blood donation camp was held at JIO reliance company in association with SSIMS & RC. Dr.Shashikala.P. Professor & Head, Dept.of Pathology spoke on the occasion about the importance of blood donation. Dr.Sonam Nandyal, Associate Prof, Post graduates Dr.Malashree, Dr.Laxmi Ronada along with technicians & blood bank staff took part in blood donation camp. Mr.Girish, Zilla Panchayat, inaugurated the function. 38 units of blood were collected.
12.3.2016:
Voluntary blood donation camp was held at D.R.M. College, Davangere. Dr.Shashikala.P. Prof. & Head of the dept.of Pathology attended the camp & spoke about the importance of the blood donation. Dr.Kavita.G.U, Professor attended the camp along with Postgraduates Dr.Shreevidyalatha, Dr.Kavitha Reddy, Dr.Chethan Sagar, Dr.Shwetha Kollur attended the camp. Total of 26 units of blood were collected.
18.3.2016:
Voluntary blood donation and blood grouping camp was organized by Government first grade college, Harihar in association with Indian Red Cross Society and National Service Scheme Organization. Dr.Shashikala.P.Prof. & Head, Dept.of Pathology spoke on importance of blood donation along with tips for maintaining good health for women. Dr.Kavita..G.U. Professor of Pathology also spoke on few aspects of blood donation. Postgraduates Dr.Chethan Sagar, Dr.Sreevidhyalatha & Dr.Kavitha Reddy also participated in the camp along with interns Dr.Sourabh & Dr.Ankita Gupta. Total 39 units of blood were collected.
21.3.2016:
Voluntary blood donation camp was organized by N.S.S cell Davangere university at Davangere university, Shivagangotri. Volunteers from various states like Orissa, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh & Kerala, NSS voluntary students & staff of Davangere University donated blood about 21 units of blood were collected. Dr.Kavita.G.U. along with Postgraduates Dr.Chethan Sagar and Dr.Shwetha Kollur participated in the camp along with house surgeons & technical staff of blood bank.
23.03.2016:
Participation of EVOLIS SYSTEM – Advanced serology automation by BIO-RAD company Detailed discussion of various kits of BIORAD i.e. HIV, HBV,HCV & ELISA-SYPHILIS was done. Results comparable with NAT testing was claimed. Concept of Ag-Ab detection in this kit was discussed. Dr.Shashikala.P.Prof. & Head Dept of pathology, Dr.Kavita.G.U, Dr.Deepti Pruthvi, Dr.Balaji.T.G. participated.
2.04.2016:
Dr.Kavita.G.U & Dr.Deepti Pruthvi, Professors, Dept.of Pathology participated in a CME, as speakers on the topic “STAR OF FLUORESCENCE – FISH” on “Medical Genetics And Fetal Medicine” conducted by Dept. of Anatomy, SSIMS & RC, Davangere.
1st to 4th June 2016:
Postgraduates - Dr.Laxmi Ronada, Dr.Chetan Sagar, Dr.Reddy Kavita, Dr.Sreevidyalatha & Dr.Ankur Majumder attended the 34th Annual National CME in Pathology which was held from 1st to 4th June 2016 at Department of Pathology, J.N.Medical College, Belgavi. Dr.Shreevidyalatha presented a poster on “ An – Encysted variant of subcutaneous pheohyphomyosis”.

A Voluntary blood donation camp was organized by Actor Ravichandran fans association at MCC “B” Block, Vanita Samaja old age home. S.S.Blood Bank conducted the camp. Dr.Shwetha.J.H, Assistant Professor, spoke about the Importance of Blood Donation. Dr.Kavita Reddy & Dr.Shreevidyalatha, III year Postgraduates and interns participated in the camp.
14.06.2016:
A Volountary blood donation camp was organized at show room of JOYALUKKAS, INDIA PVT.LTD., P.B.Road, Davangere. Employees of the show room donated blood. Dr.Shashikala.P. Professor & Head of the Department of Pathology, was the chief guest on the occasion and spoke about the importance of blood donation. Dr.Kavita G.U , Professor of Pathology along with postgraduates Dr.Shreevidyalatha, Dr.Chetan.Sagar, Dr.Nishanth, Interns and S.S.Blood Bank conducted the camp. 26 units of blood were collected.
16.6.2016:
Voluntary blood donation camp was organized at S.S.Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre on the occasion of the 86th Birthday of Hon. Secretary of Bapuji Education Association Shri.Dr.Shamanur Shivashankarappaji. The programme was jointly organized by students union. Junior Doctors Association and S.S.Blood Bank, Dept.of Pathology, SSIMS & RC. 33 students donated blood on this occasion.
03.10.2016:
Blood Donation camp was conducted at UBDT College, Davangere. Dr. Shashikala. P. inaugurated blood donation camp and gave a talk about awareness and blood donation. Asst.Professor – Dr. Shwetha. J.H.,along with Postgraduates Dr.Laxmi Ronada and, Dr. Malashree, with interns and lab-technicians conducted the camp.

CPC was held at Department of Pathology with Department of Surgery. A case on Breast lump was discussed on various aspects of clinical features , FNAC findings and histopathological features. . Staff members and Post Graduates along with house surgeons of Department of Pathology and Department of Surgery participated in the discussion

Voluntary blood donation camp was organized by HDFC bank Ltd MBA (“ Bapuji-B-School’’) college. Professor- Dr. Kavita. G.U. along with Post graduates Dr. Nishanth, Dr. Malashree, Intern’s and blood bank technicians conducted the camp.

P. attended the conference and was the chairperson for Dr. Krishna M. Bhargava Memorial oration- Thyroid gland – VIBGYOR at FNAC by Dr. Shameen Shariff. Prof. and head MVJ med college.

CME on ‘Hemato-oncology beyond morphology’- Leukemia/ Lymphoma / Myeloma. organized by Dept of pathology ,SSIMS & RC, Davangere. Dr. Shashikala. P. attended the CME along with Postgraduate students. Dr. Shashikala was the KMC observer - and chair person for Myeloma – Recent advances by Dr. Seetharam A and Dr. Girish Balikai.

Dr. Shashikala. P. attended APCON 16- National Conference of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists held in Jaipur . She was the Chairperson for Dr. Gaya Prasad memorial pathology symposium. Topic – Diffuse Endocrine System and Paragangliomas- pathology ,predictive Biochemistry and Genetics and was also Coauthor for poster entitled “Exploratory single blind study on Polarising and light microscopic appearance of crystals of commonly prescribed drugs.

Workshop on pathology update and Hands on Immunohistochemistry was held at SSIMS & RC. Dr. Sonam. S. Nandyal attened the workshop and was the KMC observer. Post graduates - Dr. Laxmi Ronada, Dr. Ankur Majumder, Dr. Chetan Sagar S. and Dr. Shreevidyalatha G.M. attended the CME. Dr. Shashikala. P. (Prof & Head of department of Pathology) is elected as Vice-President of KCIAPM- Karnataka Chapter of the Indian Association of Pathologist and Microbiologist. Dr. Kavita. G.U. ( Professor. department of Pathology ) is appointed as editorial member of KCIAPM News Bulletin.

Voluntary blood donation camp was organized at SOG colony, Ramanagara on Thursday in association with S.S. Blood bank and Sri. Anjaneya seva samiti. Dr. Neetha. Y, Assistant professor, Dept of Pathology along with Dr. Malashree PG, interns, blood bank technicians and nursing staff attended the camp. 36 units of blood were collected.

The talk was conducted for 04th & 05th term students and included demonstrations , role plays etc .Mam highlighted the importance of Pathology as a cornerstone for becoming a good physician and gave tips on how to study Pathology.

Karnataka chapter of Indian association of Pathology & Microbiologists organized slide seminar in co- ordination with Anand Diagnostic Laboratory, Bengaluru on 18th of February, 2017 from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. The following PG’s participated – Dr. Shweta. S. Kollur, Dr. Malashree.

STATE LEVEL CENTURION SLIDE SEMINAR – 25th & 26th MARCH- 2017. “Centurion slide seminar” was organized by the Dept. of Pathology SSIMS & RC in association with Academy of Pathology on 25th & 26th of March- 2017. The slide seminar hosted several well versed pathologists from in and around Karnataka who shared their knowledge on specific biopsy cases which comprised of 100 slides from 07 pathologists. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. H.R. Chandrashekhar, former Principal JJMMC, DVG. Dr. Shashikala. P, Organizing Chairman, HOD, Dept of Pathology gave the preamble of the seminar. Dr. Niranjan Murthy B. Dr. Aparna Gangoli, Dr. Raja Pratibhan S.R , Dr. Annapoorni S, Dr. Kishan Prasad. H.L, Dr. Bindu Rani S. and Dr. Veena. S were the distinguished speakers. Dr. B.S. Prasad, Principal, presided over the function & Dr. Kalyani R, secretary of Academy of Pathology was the chief guest Dr. Rajashekar K.S, Prof. & Head Dept of Pathology, JJMMC was the KMC observer. Other invitees Dr. N.K. Kalappanavar, Medical Director, SSIMS & RC, Dr. Prakash Kumar Prof. of Pathology, Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi, Dr. Shadakshari, Dr. Vani were present during the function. All the speakers were felicitated by the organizing team. 80 post graduates from Goa, Bangalore,Gulbarga, Bellary, Bellur, Dharwad, Mangalore & Tumkur took part in the mega event of this academic feast. Certificates were handed over to the participants with 04 KMC credit hours & a memento to the HODs of each college as a token of gratitude. The 44th Annual conference of Karnataka chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists was organized by the Department of Pathology, SSIMS & RC at the college auditorium on 30/08/2017, 31/08/2017 and 01/09/2017. Around 375 delegates participated in the conference. Preconference CME was conducted on 30th Aug. and was inaugurated by watering of plant by Dr. Kalappanavar, Dr. Arun Kumar, Dr. Shashikala. P, Dr. Kavita. G.U, Dr. Deepti Pruthvi. A feast of scientific sessions followed. Executive committee meeting of KCIAPM members took place in the evening. The first day of conference 31st Aug was inaugurated by lighting of lamp. Sri A.C Jayanna was the chief guest. Dr. M.R Parthasarathy and Dr. A.V. Ramaprasad. Oration was given by Dr. Radhika Srinivasan, scientific sessions followed . Post lunch session consisted of oral paper and poster presentation by delegates. A sumptuous banquet was organized in the evening. General body meeting was conducted and Dr. Shashikala. P was elected as president of KCIAPM and Dr. Deepti Pruthvi was elected as an executive committee member. 1st Sept, second day of conference scientific sessions continued. Final paper presentation for best paper was carried out. Valedictory function followed award distribution for best paper and poster. Speakers from vasion parts of the country who gave thir deliberations during the scientific sessions. Dr. Chetan, Dr. Thota Asha, Dr. Usha Kini, Dr. Adarsh, Dr. Arvinder, Dr. Annapoorni, Dr. Sanjay Pai, Dr. Sushma, Dr. Alok, Dr. Anusha & Dr. Ravi Kumar were the speakers from various parts of the country who gave their deliberations during the scientific sessions. The conference was unique in its accent on eco friendly aspects and the effort to include social responsibility as a part of the conference.

Mr. Sivasankar QC specialist, BIORAD laboratories and Mr. Imteaz were the resource persons. Dr. C.R Mahi Belgaum spoke on the basics of quality control. Fifty delegates form SSIMS&RC and JJMMC attended the programme. Principal Dr. B.S. Prasad inaugurated the CME and spoke about the importance and role laboratory in patent management.
