Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental disorders—which include various affective, behavioural, cognitive and perceptual disorders. The term was first coined by the German physician Johann Christian Reil in 1808. Mental disorders are diagnosed in accordance with criteria listed in diagnostic manuals such as the widely used Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the American Psychiatric Association, and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) edited and used by the World Health Organization., Psychiatric treatment applies a variety of modalities, including medication, psychotherapy and a wide range of other techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation

About the Deaprtment Manned by highly qualified specialists, this department has full fledged and sufficient staff. The well equipped OPD has four consultation rooms, one E.C.T, one E.C.G room, patients waiting area along with seminar room ( clinical demonstration room) with a capacity of 30-35 students and full fledged departmental library. The department has separate male and female wards of adequate capacity with special equipments like biofeedback machine, E.C.T, E.C.G and Psychometry (Psychodiagnostic and I.Q. testing) the department attends to over 40 out patients everyday assisted by an efficient round the clock nursing staff, duty doctors and a Psychologist.

Services being offered by the Deaprtment : The Psychiatric OPD is serving with the aim of providing optimal mental health care to the patients on a regular basis including all Sundays and general holidays for : General Adult Psychiatry Deaddiction Child and adolescent psychiatry Geriatric Psychiatry Neuropsychiatry Perinatal Psychiatry Consultation Liaison psychiatry And also serving the emergency psychiatric cases, crisis intervention The OPD is giving consultation services for those with stress, Depression, Anxiety through proper psychopharmachotherapy, regular Psychotherapy, Biofeedback , J.P.M.R and other relaxation therapy and other services include I.Q. testing , child Guidance consultation with proper parent management training( to the parents of Mentally retarded children, children with behavioural problem etc..). Our future motto: To conduct continuing medical education programs. To extend services to both community oriented and community based services including non-psychiatric disorders, half-way homes and elderly persons. To develop health education materials to both professionals and non-professionals in the field of Mental Health.
