Department of Microbiology

 

 

Department of microbiology at S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre is well equipped and with adequate number of teaching and non-teaching staff members for undergraduate (MBBS) teaching programme.  The department is also ornamented with eight service laboratory. 

Bacteriology service laboratory is equipped to carry out aerobic & anaerobic culture, with state of art equipments like incubators, laminar airflow, CO2 incubators, freezing centrifuges etc.,

 

Serology service laboratory which caters for the serological diagnosis of various infectious diseases like HIV, HBsAg, HCV & Western Blot.  Equipments available in this laboratory are ELISA reader & automatic washer, centrifuges etc., 

Infrastructure for Undergraduate teaching are a lecture hall with capacity of 150 students, well equipped practical hall with a capacity of 90 students & two demonstration halls. 

Departmental museum is another feather in cap of the Microbiology dept. which is well illustrated with descriptive charts covering various aspects of Microbiology, Virological models & Parasitological specimens.

The department already has infrastructure for past graduate teaching which includes a seminar hall & a Postgraduate research laboratory with Hi-tech equipments. 

Apart from the service laboratory in the college, dept also maintains the central diagnostic microbiology laboratory in the hospital premises. 

Department monitors the Central Sterilization Supply Department & Hospital Infection control committee which are focused on patient education, hospital waste disposal & forming hospital antibiotic policy. 

Department has also conducted a CME on “ Antibiotic policy in a Teaching Hospital”.  Eminent speakers Dr. Vijaykumar HOD, Microbiology, JSS Medical College, Mysore. Dr. Srinivasa HOD, Microbiology St. John’s Medical college, Bangalore spoke on the occasion.   

The academic programmes of this department is tailored to inculcate a culture of research & prepare medical graduates for world-class competence in the field of medicine.  In this regard department of Microbiology has taken a research project on “Bacteriophages against Multidrug resistant bacteria isolated from wound infections.”  

A highly experienced and qualified teaching faculty with many research papers in national journals to their credit runs the department.
