Dermatology is defined as
the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of skin
disorders. However, dermatologists do not confine themselves merely to a
study of intrinsic disorders of the skin, but also study internal
medicine and the many environmental and occupational factors that so
frequently cause skin problem.
Dermatology is changing at
an ever-accelerating pace, both in the amount of scientific knowledge and
treatments available. Until a few years ago, skin biopsy and
Electrosurgery were the only procedures practiced by dermatologists. But
now modern day dermatology led to expansion of expertise in dermatological
surgery, laser therapy and cosmetology. Cosmetic awareness
and increased ageing skin problems are also now contributing to the rise
in popularity of this branch in our country.
Department of Dermatology is
one of the prestigious Departments of our Institution. It has got
experienced staff in dermatology & also experts in cosmetology &
dermatosurgery. It attracts lot of patients from in & around Davangere
both out patient & in patients for treatment and various cosmetology &
dermatosurgical procedures.
The Department of
Dermatology is equipped with HOD chamber, 4 consultation rooms,
departmental laboratory, minor OT, phototherapy room, seminar room and
departmental library.
The
minor OT is
well equipped to do dermatosurgical and cosmetology procedures. The
procedures are all types of Skin biopsies,
Electrosugery
for benign lesions, freckles, warts etc,
Chemical cauterization, Mole surgery,
Subsicion for scars,
Intralesional therapy, Iontophoresis for
hyperhydrosis of palms and soles and Chemical peels for skin rejuvenation,
pigmentation, acne etc.
Intense pulse light therapy (iPulse)
Intense
pulse light therapy is for treatment of
unwanted hairs, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, acne & pigmentation is
also available with good results.
Phototherapy
Department is equipped with
phototherapy room, having multiutility phototherapy unit, UVA comb & NBUVB
spot therapy unit for treatment of vitiligo, psoriasis, lichen planus etc.
Departmental Laboratory
Department is also equipped
with side laboratory where staining procedures are performed for various
infections.
1. Grams staining 2. Fungal
scraping (KOH mount) 3. Slit skin smear (Z & N staining) 4. Tzanck smear
etc.
Seminar room
will accommodate 50
student’s where clinics are engaged. The students are benefited from a
modern seminar hall with audiovisual aids and a well stocked departmental
library.
Departmental activities
The regular continued
medical education progammes (CME) are conducted for all postgraduates &
staff of various medical colleges in Karnataka state. Regular programmes
like seminar, journal club, case discussions & also histopathological
slide discussion are held. All staff members are allowed to attend
national, state & zonal conferences & also work shops and CME’s to upgrade
their knowledge.
An ICTC orientation
programme was conducted. On 23/3/2010. tuesday
Where in awareness about HIV
infection, AIDS & prevention was created among staff nurse, ward boys &
lab technicians.
Research activities
ICMR short term student
Project titled “A clinical and etiological study of primary and
secondary pyodermas”.
ICMR-Adhok Project is
submitted to ethical committee titled “A Randomised control study of
association of chronic urticaria with helicobacter pylori infection and
effect of eradication on disease”.
